For a new application and database model, our team is trying to decide whether to use the hierarchyid data type. Would appreciate any feedback, pros and cons, from anyone who has implemented it.

Thanks for pointing me to the articles. We're still debating whether to go with the new syntax and non-ANSI SQL, but you added some valuable information.
