Here are some SQL Server Interview Questions

  • Jeff Moden (5/14/2015)

Interviewer: What makes you think you're a good <<any job title here>>?

Candidate: I don't. It's just that everyone else sucks so bad that I end up looking good. 😀

    LOL

Best milkshakes ever. I don't like that boss very much.

That and a grilled cheese sandwich. I want to see his lips swell up to match the size of his mouth. 😛

Question: Can you outline for me how to best design a system so that I can move it between Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL, DB2, Couchbase, DocumentDB, Hadoop, Redshift, Azure SQL or MongoDB depending on the time of day, direction of the wind and the stomach contents of the goat we slaughtered this morning?

No problem! What about Access? You want that too, because we can do it. 😎

OMG! I can't believe I forgot Access... and Excel. Ooh, and we'll need it to work in PowerPivot too. Actually PowerAnything. And make it support JSON... and XML.

PowerAnything will require that we add our Artificial Intelligence module.

Are you referring to the Ultron project?

  • Real interview question that I asked during a tech screen for an entry-level programmer position:

Q: Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

    A: CEO!

Background: This young fellow, an American by his name/voice/resume, was applying for a job at an Israeli company at which all high-level meetings were conducted in Hebrew.

The rest of the interview didn't go well either since he couldn't answer any of the technical questions correctly.

At least they think they are. They are more aptly the "Entitled Generation." At least they think so.

Define "a system" and what does it mean to "move it".

Oh, OK. So you don't understand. Well, thanks for driving out here into the middle of Montana for this interview, but we were expecting someone a little more psychic. Thanks for your time.

  • It's important for us that you'll be a good fit in our team, so the following question will define if you get the job or not.

    Leading commas or trailing commas?

That's exactly why I would never drive to Montana for a job interview unless I first had a phone interview with both (seperately) HR and the person who would be my manager. It also helps to link up with a former employee from the team. It's so easy to step into a pile of mess these days.

Whoa! Why do I care? I get a copy of SQL Prompt, right? I'll just fix your horrible code formatting on the fly. No worries.

    Leading commas or trailing commas?

It makes no difference to me so long as you end with a semicolon.

    Leading commas or trailing commas?

I don't really care either way as long as it is consistent. 😎

OK, I actually prefer leading because it makes debugging easier but I am not that adamant about it as long as each column is on a separate row and not all slammed together.
