Help with Backups (Urgent)

  • Hi - I currently have a DB with full recovery mode set on a SQL2008 Server. The last successful backup was taken on the 6th June but only transaction logs have been running since then.

This is becuase we currently have an issue with available space on the Server drive which should be resolved by tomorrow. The trn logs are set to backup every 30mins from 06:30 until 19:00. I have checked the SQL log and there are entries on the 7th June to advise the trn log could not be backed up due to not enough space being available.

My concern is that this would have broken the chain and I'm left in a vunerable position with the data. If this is the case can I run a differential backup manually & what would this give me in terms of recovery should the inevitable happen.

Any comments/help would be very much appreciated.

    Kind Regards

    Dax

    No.

  • I just recently acquired a server and while documenting it I noticed it hasn't completed a transaction log backup in weeks due to disk space. The chain was not broken. I just cleared out some space immediately and manually ran a backup.

  • Hi - Are you saying the chain would remain intact?

    Many thanks

  • Yes.

  • You could always move the existing backup files to another location (local, network or removable) and if a restore requires the files needed just use the prompt for files option when restoring that way you can copy each file or x number of files back before the restore proceeds, once each file has been used in the restore process it can be removed to free up space for the next required files.

    Hope this helps.
