I have hada copy of SQL 2008 and SQL 2012 for ages on my laptop ( win7 ) and never had a problem. I use VS 2010 for my development. Suddenly yesterday I started getting errors such as 'could not load xpstar.dll or one of its references reason 193....'
After many hours I decided to uninstall 2012 and go onto the Microsoft Website an install SQL 2012 Express SP1. All seemed to go well until about 75% way through the installation an error message popped up 'sql server 2012 service pack 1 setup..provider load failure'
The installation seemed to continue ok but at the end it the status says all have succeeded except for Reporting Services, Database Engine Services, Full Text and SQL Replication
Anyway I rebooted and went into SQL 2012 Management Studio but I simply cant get the Instance to open
SQL 2008 is still working fine
Can anyone help me with this installation error. I have heard things like WMI issues but I have no idea what that is
This is stopping all my local development
Many thanks
Peter

Please don't title your post 'help'. We know you need help, that's what the forum is for. Tell us WHAT you need help with, to attract the attention of people who can help.
I did the first logical thing, I googled your error message. I found this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/980142
If this does not help, I am at a loss as to why you'd remove the full edition for Express, I'd uninstall Express and put the full edition back, or uninstall and reinstall. When trying something like that to fix an error, I like to reboot often, to make sure each step in the process has completed.

What changed on the machine? It's unlikely that the server instance just suddenly decided to stop working. Surely something lead to the initial problem. I'd look there to figure out why you're getting the installation errors now.
Also, I'm with the previous post, why uninstall the full version to install the Express edition? That doesn't make sense.

Perhaps it was a trial edition which had expired.

Richard, that's possible, but he didn't say that was the case. Really, a question like this allows for not much more than googling the error message or giving an answer if you've had the same issue. Any missing detail, makes that difficult. Having an expired trial may well cause other versions not to install, for example ( I don't know, but it's possible and therefore the lack of information could make it harder to answer )
