One of the biggest risks to any organization is having people with the wrong attitude, bad work habits or incompatible skills. These people are not just dead wood; they also hurt the morale of the team. Good workers do not want to work with these people and it may become one of the reasons for them to leave the company.

Loner, I like your post. I have recently encountered the people of type 2, and my feeling is one word: Boring.

I think that every type of a person can be helpful in any enterprise. It takes a good manager to do that. Let me show you possible examples of how these types that you have listed could be put to good work:
1 Ready-to retire: ask them for the advice repeatedly, they are always happy to provide it
2. Argue type - this is sort of myself. I am usually asked to submit my consideration in writing which I do and all others usually read and comment. In many cases it helps to predict possible issues with the projects
3. No Training - No Work, no self- training. My manager would explain that the self-training is not really free to him, he is paying someone's paycheck while he takes free online classes or reads a book while the rest of the group works on a project. This lets this person know that this is a paid training and they usually do it.
4. Incompetent: they have core expertise in other areas. Find these areas
5. Old Timer - can you just respect them?
6. Ego maniac: pair him with # 2 (argue type) , he will test everything
7. Internet Surfer –Make them use online applications
8. Mysterious employee with relations in high places–This is the most valuable asset. make good friend with him!
9. Complaining everything – I agree here!
10. Living in the past – They say that New is a very well forgotten Old. Make them to use their memories of "good old" things to enhance new things

I like Yelena's post, except what if the people who fit these categories ARE the manangers? Not that I'm speaking from personal experience....

Yelenna, I agreed with you some of the points and actually they are great advices. But I disagreed with you in some points, for self training, I am talking about buying a book and reading at home, not using company time. I bought a lot of books using my own money to update my knowledge. Internet surfer, they will only go to the web site they like, working is not in their dictionary. Incompetent - maybe they have other expertise, not necessary valuable in the company. If a coder cannot code, what are you going to give them to do? Tell them to see a career consultant !
