I have no idea about thankgiving! I am from Romania.

Actually, not being American, I've never really understood what Thanksgiving was celebrating (apart from eating too much turkey :)).

Is it:

a) The Pilgrim Fathers actually getting to America without drowning etc.

b) ... getting to somewhere that wasn't British/French/whatever direct rule.

c) General thanks for whatever you can think of (family, health, etc)

d) Just an excuse for a holiday...

e) Something else...

Having just read the Thanksgiving(United States) Wikipedia article it seems that (c) is probably closer...

Thanksgiving, or Thanksgiving Day, celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November, at the end of the harvest season, is an annual American Federal holiday to express thanks for one's material and spiritual possessions.

It also seems the holiday has links with several traditions and historical celebrations at various times in the year, including links to harvest festival, the Pilgrims, etc.

Thanksgiving also equals BIG HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL

For those who don't celebrate Thanksgiving, this is Football as in American Football, not as in you hit the ball with your foot, but still very entertaining!

Also start of the Holiday Parades (this is as in Christmas Parades) and big shopping season.
