You shouldn't have twitter on all the time. I'd check it 5 minutes a day, maybe see if there's something to interact with, and ignore it the rest of the time. A few periodic checks/posts are all you need to do some networking and meet people.Of course, I'd say that interacting with people here is the same thing.
I open it and use for any amount of time and it is considered an ethics violation in that Twitter is not allowed and if used it is considered private use of a state resource to support social media. If I use my own phone it is again a violation due to the use of state time on a forbidden activity. It is so harsh that I have to get permission to access LinkedIn to check peoples references and other online information.
This is why I do read and comment at this site. Since it can be presented as a learning resource I can and many others in government do participate here.

I think the challenge is a pretty appropriate challenge. A lot of IT folks are introverts and it isn't necessarily easy for a lot of people to walk up to people they don't know.
That is the cool thing about #sqlfamily. At SQL Saturdays, UG meetings, on twitter or at some of the larger conferences, it is very hard to not meet 3 people you don't know. You almost have to go out of your way to try to not meet somebody new. So the real obstacle to this challenge (imho) is to get yourself out to an event.
Even if you don't meet somebody at an event, the attendance will be well worth it. Then maybe you can meet 3 people at the next event after that once you start to feel your way into the #sqlfamily comfort zone.
It is a great means to find job opportunities, socialize and to either get help or give help solving problems.

I'm in London. Thanks for that; I think I signed up for one of those yesterday. I signed up for a few! It's a bit intimidating, but I'm sure the first time is the hardest. You all seem to get a lot out of it.
It is intimidating, but most of us are just regular people. Just excuse yourself, say hi and tell someone your name. Tell them it's your first time and they'll take care of you.
I'm going to do it. I'm also going to check back that Nick H and BWFC go to theirs ;-).

I was due to go the SQL usergroup in Leeds tonight but it's been moved to next Wednesday now and I can't make that date - I'll try and get to the next one in the new year.
BTW - I thought the SQL Relay event in Manchester yesterday was great. Some really informative bits and a demo of why not to use surface for your presentation!

Of course, tongue in cheek. James'll bounce back - he's a great guy and he'll probably come back with three laptops next time or a means of beaming the slides directly into your brain. Even without a slide deck he's really worth listening to - I had him come down to Cardiff back in August for a q&a session in the pub about azure and he really impressed the attendees with the breadth and depth of his knowledge.

Nick, I forgot too. It certainly would have been good to meet a fellow user. I'm debating whether to go to the Manchester user group on Thursday but it's the works night out on the Friday after so I might be pushing my luck with higher authority.....
