I'm looking to get certified in SQL Server. I don't have any Microsoft certs, but my employer has asked me to get certified at the MCITP level. My background is as an Oracle DBA and I've been working with SQL Server for a while now.
What is a good plan of attack? I have plenty of lab opportunities so gear to practice with is not a problem.
Is there a particular set of books that anyone would care to recommend?

I recommend the book "SQL Server 2008 Administration: Real-World Skills for MCITP Certification and Beyond (Exams 70-432 and 70-450) " by Tom Carpenter

When you go to the certification website, there's usually a Learning Plan associated with that certification. It contains useful links to articles, white papers and books.
Try doing as much as you can from that list. And combine that with practical experience of course.

There is no substitute for hands on experience on SQL Server for the certification but certification also requires systematic effort / study on different topics. As pointed out by Koen, please go through the e-Learning site and see the exam contents. To pass the exam you need to know ALL the topics at least at beginner’s level or conceptual level. Mastering only FEW of topics won’t help you in certification.
