Would be a good to have an option to go the first unread post in an active thread.

Do you mean the first post that you have not read?
Have you tried the "Active Topics" link?

Not exactly.
'Active Topics' takes you to threads with new posts.
Some sites have the ability to:
1. View New Messages (Active Topics)
2. Then click a button alongside each thread to 'Go to first new post'
http://www.accessvba.com is an example of a site where this works well

actually this forum software has the feature you've mentioned. Look at http://forum.snitz.com/forum/ at the bottom of that page!. This is somehow what you want, right?
Along with a sophisticated search engine, mentioned in another thread, it has been customised here.

Yes that site seems to work that way just the terminology is different
