Good question, as it highlights the fact that the "GO" keyword is interpreted by the SSMS client, and is not part of T-SQL.

Finally, I can give you one example where this knowledge can be useful: when you have a co-worker whose idea of fun it is to change the batch seperator to, for instance, "SELECT" when you are away from your keyboard, and then watch you struggle to understand why your code is not working anymore. After this QotD, you will probably be able to recognise and fix the problem much faster than you otherwise would have.
I got this wrong... mostly because I didn't know you can change the batch separator... I was wondering if NotGo was some command I had never read about.
that said... your idea of screwing with somebody by reconfiguring the SSMS client when they are AFK to make SELECT a batch separator... is an awesome idea. And you have given me evil thoughts.

First let me apologize for the poor wording (True/False instead of Yes/No) and say in my defense that I understand that my skill with the English language is exceeded only by my skill at building fully working star drives out of tin cans.
That being said I had to learn this obnoxious setting a number of years back because I received a script from a vendor where they were not using the standard "GO" batch seperator. Drove me bananas for awhile before I figured it out.
Knowledge is power, even stupid knowledge :hehe:

Hey! That was never my idea!
I suggested that you might want to know is to be prepared for the "jokes" fromm evil co-workers, not to become the evil co-worker!

Perhaps, but if they were reading this thread they'd know about it. And I encourage all of my co-workers to read SSC daily. So perhaps we'll see if they were paying attention? :Whistling:

I knew that Go was a batch separator but never considered changing it to something else. Considering how widely it is accepted, I cannot see a reason to change it unless you want to mess with someone or are forced to use a different one when running someone else's code.

Good question.
For everybody who seems to be hung on the verbiage I can only say "GET OVER IT". English is not the native tongue of everybody on this site. I mean seriously folks, you are complaining about the exact verbiage of the multiple choice responses to a trivia question. The answers were pretty obvious what was meant. I applaud Kenneth for his creative thinking in coming up with this question. To the complainers...I haven't seen you offer any QOTD to the public. It takes great courage because the crowd on these will nitpick you to death on the smallest minute detail that has no affect on the question.
Keep them coming Kenneth and don't let these people throwing rotten tomatoes at you discourage you from creating new ones.

Sean,
I really appreciate the defense 🙂 And I knew going into posting a QotD that someone was going to complain about something. You very rarely see a discussion without someone complaining. Although I should probably point out that English is my native language .. and only language for that matter .. I just suck at it 🙂

I thought it was you language but it just kind of drives me nuts to hear people complain about such silly things. If this were being submitted as college credit or something I would agree, but for an online trivia question it just seems pointless.

FYI In case anyone is interested you can change the batch seperator (and other settings) on a single query window by right clicking on the window and going to "Query Options" (it's at the bottom).
That way you can change your settings for your current query window and not have to remember to change them back again so your other query windows.

This one tip is great! I used to struggle between options settings that I liked that a couple co-workers did not, so I was switching them when RDP'ing to our servers, and them getting mad at me because they had to change them again.
