I'm going to start working on my first report using SSRS 2008. I've written 2, in SSRS 2005, although, frankly, it's been a couple of years.
First thing I want to know, did I install the right thing? I installed Report Builder 2.0; is that SSRS 2008?
Second, I could use a quick tutorial on writing reports in SSRS 2008. The report I need to write will produce a form, with data from SQL Server, that looks like a letter. It gets printed out and put into a client's chart, along with other paperwork. i.e.: is it not a table type of report. I'm not sure how to go about creating such a report, and could use help getting started, please.

during the install you have to select reporting services. After the install you have to setup the reporting server. This is a pretty large topic to cover but there are plenty of good articles on the net that do a much better job than I ever could.

I must have done something wrong. I got my installation disk, put it in, and I thought installed SSRS 2008. At least it told me it installed SSRS. But, when I go to Start | Microsoft SQL Server 2008 I don't see any Business Intelligence Development Studio. I have no idea how I can create a SSRS 2008 report without that.
What have I left out?

You might also see it as Microsoft Visual Studio 2008, maybe in a separate program group.

Thank you for your response, dbowlin. I tried looking into both the SQL 2008 and VS 2008 folders, but couldn't see it. Here's what I see:
Microsoft SQL Server 2008
Import and Export Data (32-bit)
SQL Server Management Studio
(Folder) Analysis Serveris
(Folder) Configuration Tools
(Folder) Documentation and Tutorials
(Folder) Integration Services
(Folder) Performance Tools
Microsoft Visual Studio 2008
Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Documentation
Microsoft Visual Studio 2008
(Folder) Visual Studio Remote Tools
(Folder) Visual Studio Tools
None of the folders under those folders have SSRS 2008.

If you look under the configuration folder do you see something that says reporting services configuration manager?

Yes, Dan, that is there. I've run it and gotten it connected to the default instance of SQL Server 2008 developer edition on my PC, but that's as far as I've gotten with it.

If you have run the configuration and you were able to get it connected then SSRS is installed. BIDS is just a version of visual studios. you should now be able to create and publish a report. If you want to test if it is working. try going to the address for your server it should be something like.
http://insert the name of your server here/reports/Pages/Folder.aspx
If all that works and you still have a question you might clarify what you are looking for if possible I am not sure what you would be missing.

I tried going to http://localhost/Reports/Pages/Folder.aspx on my development PC, but that failed. ("Resource cannot be found"). I checked in IIS on my machine, and it isn't there, either. Then I checked under C:\INetPub\wwwroot\ to see if there was a Reports folder, and there isn't.

I actually have a hard time getting locahost to work as well. I have never really devoted any time to figuring out why since you should be able to use localhost but I have to enter my actual PC name. like in my case the name of my dev pc is SQLDevDesktop. So I put that in place of localhost and it works fine. you might try that.

I tried http://amci-rjf/Reports/Pages/Folder.aspx (my machine's name is "amci-rjf"), but I got the same "The resource cannot be found" error message.
Thank you for your help, Dan.
