General Network Error...

  • Hi,

My replication was doing fine earlier but recently i got this error "General Network Error. Please check your network documentation" whereby the replication failed at some tables.

I was doing a push transactional replication from the publisher.

I have posted some questions at the Microsoft SQL Server newsgroup but stillnot able to resolve ths issue

I am using SQL Server 2000 std edition on Win2000 Server

Could any one kindly advise what might be the cause ?

    Thanks.

  • General Network error is very generic, as it states - it is hard to jump to a conclusion or determine the cause. I have seen it coming up if the CPU is too busy on the server, new connections get general NW Error and r unable to connect. Run Profiler Traces and System Monitor and capture the error, if it is occuring continuosly. Is there a repitition of events when the error occurs - try to determine a trend? Check the SQL Server Error Log, Windows Application and System Logs during the time when the error occured.

  • Hi, I have also seen this error a couple of times when the data to be replicated was too heavy. The most probable reason for this could be resorce crunch on server or network choking.

You can try changing Distribution agent profile settings. I think it was BCPbatchSize and Commit batch size that needs to be reduced.

    You may try this.

Hope this solves your problem. Even if doesnt I think its worth giving it a try.

  • I had a similiar problem with pull replication over a sometimes troublesome WAN connection.  Within the Distribution agent profile settings, I increased the 'Query Timeout' setting.  This seemed to fix the problem.  I haven't had an issue since.
