GDR vs QFE for security patch

  • I noticed some security patches are released in both GDR and QFE, while some are only available for QFE. As far as I know QFE is considered cumulative (i.e. if there are 5 patches between a major version and the security patch, then the QFE version will also includes the previous 5 patches while the GDR version will contain only the necessary fix).

So how come some security patches are available in both GDR and QFE but not for the other? Does it mean GDR is considered a must have (serious security flaw) while QFE is more optional and should be only installed when necessary?

Thanks, I have seen the first link but not the second. I am still not sure the GDR/QFE implication on security patch - does that mean a security patch only available as QFE is considered less important than one that has a GDR version available?

  • I know this is old thread but anyone looking newly for answer this may be useful.

GDR (General Distribution Release), it applies to much broader base of operating systems not to only a specific server/issue

    &

QFE (Quick Fixes), it applies for specific server having specific issues

read the above shared 2 links before deciding the pro's and con's of both GDR & QFE before installing.
