  We have now dropped all replication and re-created it from scratch.

  It successfully creates the snapshot - no problem. However when I start the Distribution agent to activate the snapshot and fill the tables etc, it fails with an 'access denied' error. It doesnt tell you where the error is, or what on. Can someone give me some pointers on which security settings I should be looking for?

  you should check the PAL (Publication Access List) in the publication properties.

  Also check in the distribution job, the parameters used to run the agent.

  If I where you, I would try to run the distribution agent with the distrib.exe, changing the parameters of the security.
