Friday afternoon hang-outs

  • <<I was relating to Tony the fact that these sheep, marooned for a thousand years on a tiny island in the Atlantic, five miles off the coast of Scotland, have evolved a surprising resourcefulness. They have an extraordinary knowledge of what is edible and what isn't.seem to prefer to eat a mix of bark, charcoal, broadleaved plants, grass, herbs, shoots, leaves and, if they can get it, seaweed.  Grass is not enough.>>

Blimey! Self-marinating sheep! Have you tasted one yet Phil?

    Cheers

  • Funny you should mention it. The other day, they were herded up into a neighbours garden overnight, where they ate all the mint and rosemary. They then went into my meadow where, after regarding it with initial suspicion, they ate all the wild garlic.

All they have to do now is to set fire to themselves and we have all the ingredients of a wonderful summer barbecue.

  • Perhaps that's where the Scottish author Iain Banks drew his inspiration for "The Wasp Factory"!

Earlier this year the BBC ran a short series on the red deer rut on the island of Rhum (Google "red deer rut" "simon king" for details) - in which they showed a clip of sheep clattering over a shingle shore foraging for seaweed. Not sure how far apart Soay and Rhum are, I left Scotland years ago, but they are both North-West coast and may therefore share shortfalls in nutrition.

  • Anyone remotely interested should read 'St Kilda Summer', by Kenneth Williamson and I Morton Boyd. It is a factual book about these remote islands and their amazing wildlife. It also tells the story of what happened when they decided to put a military radar station there in the 1950s. Very nostalgic for me, as I used to stay in InvernessShire during summer holidays, as a child.

    Best wishes,

  • <<InvernessShire>> an area of outstanding natural beauty and flourishing wildlife. I grew up 30 miles to the East, Findhorn, and we spent summers almost self-sufficient near Ullapool.

I've seen your recommended book at home on the same shelf as Derek Tangye, although not yet read it.

A million miles away from SQL Server.

  • I walk down to the beach and look at the sun setting on the Pacific Ocean, order a pizza or some shrimp burritos, and then play a few hours of World of Warcraft.

  • I wish! I live in the desert (Las Cruces, NM). It's usually 100f+ outside in the summer when I get off work, the sand would be at White Sands, 70~ miles to the East, and the only water we'd have is the Rio Grande (when it's running). I suppose I could drive up to Elephant Butte Lake/Reservoir for a beach and possibly sand.

I have found one or two good pizza places, we're a college town so there's lots of marginal pizza (haven't yet found really good Mexican food, but we do have excellent Thai & Italian). But if I'm lucky, I'm driving up to Cloudcroft (elevation 8600', 2 hours away) where my wife lives. No pizza in Cloudcroft (that's edible), and in the nearest town, about all we have is Pizza Hut, Domino's, and Papa John's. So frequently it's Applebee's or Chili's.

But I do have WoW on my MacBook in addition to SQL 2005 via Parallels/XP Pro. WoW is my Mon-Thurs refuge at night, I prefer playing with my wife on the weekends.

Otherwise, your Friday sounds almost idyllic, Leslie.

  • Sometimes I feel guilty about it...but the margarita smooths the guilt.
