Frequency of Alerts Raised

  • Hi All

Running Windows Server 2003 and SQL Server 2000 sp3a.

Just hoping someone could confirm the frequency with which alerts can be handled.

On this server we don't have Outlook installed and emails are sent using xp_smtp_sendmail (www.sqldev.net).

How I've got things setup is that alerts are defined for most of the severity levels these alerts fire a job that sends out an email.

I've noticed a couple of instances where 3-4 errors occur within a minute but only one alert is raised. Checking the count in Enterprise Manager also shows that only one alert was raised. Although the SQL error log shows the 3-4 error messages.

Is this because the SQL Agent can only schedule things down to the minute?

  • In alert properties "Delay between responses" value by default is 1 minute. You can set it from 1 second to 720 minutes. Try to decrease value.
