= format(Fields!period.Value,"MM-yyyy")
When I use this , it changes my data from yyyymm to "MM-yyyy"
ie 201308 to "MM-yyyy"
Any ideas???

Most likely answer seems to me to be that your data item is not a date, so using date formatting options won't work...
MM

Yes, So, I changed the format in SQL and then just bought the field to SSRS.
That worked.
