File Fragmentation of MDF File

If the data and index files are separated (mdf and ndf), does it matter where the amount of free space is required/needed?

Yes, your log files should be stable and not be growing. Your data files will grow - so you want available space there.

  • Jeff,

I had meant to ask if both the mdf and ndf need the extra space, or is the need just in mdf file. I would think we need the extra space in both files.

(Some databases do not have ndf, just the mdf and some DBs have both seprated).

So we need the extra space for 2 things, as I observe:

    *Growth of DB/Index

    *Need to Reindex.

    Thanks for the ideas

    Dan

  • That's why I keep stating data files - I've had a few systems where they didn't have mdf/ndf files because someone decided to change it. SQL Server doesn't really care.

Yes - you want the space available in the data files.
