  I have persuaded my company to invest in a SQLServer 2005 Enterprise Edition, they have also agreed to a standby\failover server (also enterprise edition) at another site. The software we will be hosting will not allow transactional replication. That (I think) leaves me with transaction log shipping and\or database mirroring which is the better option?  Thanks in advance

  If you want an automated failover system then you want to use database mirroring.
