I am having problems connecting to a remote sql server over a vpn connection. During registration process, it does see the server name the sql server resides on but when trying to finish process using sql server authenication, I get a 'server does not exist or access denied'. After looking at all the messages in this forum (52 pages), I did see some messages about this. I have tried to create an ODBC connection as well and it won't connect either. Someone in an earlier message mentioned named pipes vs tcp/ip. Does SQL Server (2000) need to be told to use tcp/ip?

I'd confirm connectivity - make sure you can ping the server you're trying to connect to.

I can ping to the server. I also can connected to shared drives on that server.

Back to your original question on TCP/IP when you get to the secound screen to setup authentication type there is a CLient Config button on the screen. Press it and confirm that the type of connection you expect is in use, else correct it. Then finish ODBC wizard.
