Really interesting question, thanks Steve.Heven't used extended events yet, so learned something new.
I haven't used them in production either. I played with them once, but found that trying to query the results was so slow that it wasn't performant enough to be used.

The initial xml query is slow. But that is if translating the xml on the fly. Staging it is many times faster and definitely very useful.
Here is an entire series showing many ins and outs on XEvents (including how to make data queries faster).
There is even an article showing the event counter target and the xml structure of that target.

If you haven't used XEvents yet, I want to know what it is that is holding you back so far. It would make good material for more articles on XEvents.
