I would consult the networking guys to see if there is any network hiccups or outages

problem is we checked all that already.
We have a dedicated ADSL line running to our ESX Server
there have been no outages as our system is at Internet Solutions which caters for banks and stuff so they have generators in place.
There has never been an outage there.

ADSL line? Is this a VPN connection? Is it over the open Net? Need to be careful.
ADSL is Asymmetric, and you may be getting too much congestion. You could be running out of network ports. The network may have a limit to how many VPN clients can connect. The Inet backbone is considerably less reliable than an internal network, and you might exceed the number of errors/dropped packets the SQL client can handle.
My guess is you need to rethink your architecture.
