Excel/Word Export fails but only for some reports, all other export formats are ok

  • SSRS is SQL 2008R2 (RTM)

    Everything was fine, until yesterday, now all of a sudden (and no-one has changed anything they tell me) running reports is still fine, but when trying to Export to Excel or Word the user gets prompted for their windows credentials to the report server or gets the Internet cannot display webpage, possible reason DNS.

    If the user sets up a subscription for Excel, is runs perfectly well and if I run the report directly on the report server (RDP onto server) its ok.

    Some reports are fine to run then export to excel so it cannot be a proxy server/network/report server issue can it?

    I cannot see any commonality for the ones failing however ones that now fail always fail if export to excel or word is run from the browser rather than via a subscription.

    The link Excel tries to use looks the same for ones that work (apart from the FileName entry of course)

    http://repportserver/Reports/Reserved.ReportViewerWebControl.axd?ReportSession=5gjq41njirhq1s5500wz0222&Culture=2057&CultureOverrides=False&UICulture=9&UICultureOverrides=False&ReportStack=1&ControlID=f6c380d8d0304e3da71b24e685f3092d&OpType=Export&FileName=Account+Report&ContentDisposition=OnlyHtmlInline&Format=EXCEL

    Looking at the log files on the report server does not help failure and success both look the same with a blank value for Stream.

    library!ReportServer_0-136!9e0!12/06/2011-11:56:58:: i INFO: RenderFromSession('/F1/Account Report')

    webserver!ReportServer_0-136!9e0!12/06/2011-11:57:02:: i INFO: Processed report. Report='/F1/Account Report', Stream=''

    I have also tried running the reprot to excel directly from my desktop using /reportserver and &rs:Format=excel but I get the same IE cannot display the webpage problem for the failing reports and immediately takes me to the open/save as prompt for the reports still working with Excel

    Any ideas?

    The network guys had added a rule and some reports' excel files being generated were treated as known vulnerabilities and blocked.
