Excel report too slow when exported from SSRS

  • I have a SSRS reports that aggregates about 300K rows. It has drilldowns everywhere.

When I export this to SSRS, the report is too slow. If I hit Crtl+A and then hit clear > Clear formats, it gets rid of the problem. All the drill downs work fine in excel then and report is super responsive.

Any idea how to fix this in SSRS so the problem is not there during export.

  • Only thing I can think of is have two reports, one with all the formatting, one with just the data grid, then open the data grid in excel, or export the report to CSV then open the CSV in Excel instead.

  • That thought had crossed my mind, but the problem is, these reports are going to our clients. Clients took months to decide on the formatting of these reports.

So the formatting, especially the drill downs, need to be saved. When I hit "Clear Formats," it does keep the drill downs and it's fast.

There should be something in particular during SSRS export that's causing this. I am just trying to figure that out and fix.
