Ever hear of SQL Database "DUMP"?

  • Hey All,

I'm asked to facilitate a regular copy of a database from our client to our DEV server.

The client insists they can FTP a database "DUMP" *not* a backup to us that contains all the data, schema and users.

Has anyone heard of this "DUMP" thing, I've always used backups for this purpose.

thanks for your consideration - jh

  • SQL dump is the same thing as a SQL Backup.  Back in the old days (SQL 6.5) the command was DUMP instead of backup.  A lot of people still call them dumps.

  • Maybe your client has an Oracle background.  I remember "dump" terminology from my Oracle DBA days, too.  The output of an Export is a .dmp or "dump" file.
