Hi, hope that some of you might be able to shed some light.
System info: Win2K server with service pack 4, Dell Poweredge 2650 (x86 based, dual processor). Physical mem 2GB, avail physical mem 1.5GB, total virtual 6GB. Running SQLserver ver 8.00.760 (service pack 3a not 3). Machine only runs SQL. A second sister system runs IIS and proprietary software which connects to the database.
Symptoms: For what appears to be no apparent reason the machine stops responding, even to pings. The proprietary web software stops accepting logins because the database is not responding. A system restart fixes the problem BUT we can't keep doing that!
The system log shows: "The server was unable to allocate from the system nonpaged pool because the pool was empty" event 2019.
What we've done so far: A colleague looked up the MS knowledge base and found that they basically say do a restart to fix the problem and label it a "memory leak". As the sister machine doesn't have the same issue, and our test machine which does have SQL installed doesn't have this issue either, we've associated it with the SQL installation. We may be wrong, but we don't think so.
So, we're wondering if it is a load related issue affecting the memory somehow but not sure how to test for this or if there is a fix?? The patch to service pack 3a seemed to work as the restarts went from occurring every 7 days to 20 days.
The following table summarises some of the errors from our system log that occurred prior to the event 2019s.
Date | Start Time | Error immediately before event | Time | Error description |
30/12/03 | 00:25 | 8032 | 00:25 | The browser service has failed to retrieve the backup list too many times on transport \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{A0AC9559-5E80-43C6-8B18-8879E241B044}. The backup browser is stopping. |
29/01/04 | 17:00 | 7031 | 17:00 | The MSSQLSERVER service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 0 milliseconds: No action. |
03/02/04 | 20:01 | 5719 | 20:00 | The browser service has failed to retrieve the backup list too many times on transport \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{A0AC9559-5E80-43C6-8B18-8879E241B044}. The backup browser is stopping. |
20/02/04 | 04:19 | 4098 | 13:40 (day before) | \Device\AFA0 : Battery is Charging |
27/02/04 | 08:17 | 20159 | 08:17 | The connection to RAC Connection made by user pppaccount using device RACPORT was disconnected. |
17/03/04 | 20:48 | 20159 | 20:46 | The connection to RAC Connection made by user pppaccount using device RACPORT was disconnected. |
Any ideas, advice, solutions??
TIA
(apologies about this appearing elsewhere, newbie posting mistake )

Although unrelated you may want to consider shutting down the browser server on the SQL box. You don't want you SQL box becoming the BDC or the PDC.

Thanks for the answers and tip, we'll make sure of this but don't think it is the issue.
Antares, all of those KB articles basically say the same thing and we're patched as heck so back to square one.

Ok, did you get a list of all services and active applications at the time?
Suggest use msinfo32 to get a snapshot fo the box when that starts and compare each time for anything unusual.
Unfortunately unless you are running some external app you didn't think of you say you are current on patches and thus none apply.
