Greetings all. My company is upgrading to SQL Server 2008 in the next few weeks however we have a delay in obtaining the software. I am tasked with building data cubes this week which I would prefer to build in 2008.
My question is this; if I get the evaluation edition and build the cubes, will these work fine once we upgrade to the full edition of SQL Server 2008? We are getting the enterprise version of 2008.

you'll have to purchase the 2008 Developer Edition in order to work with cubes/analysis server/BIDS/Integration Services;
those functions are not included in the free express versions. the express version comes with the basic SQL server engine, and unless you get the Advanced Services Version of Express, does not come witha GUI/Management Studio either.
you'll have to pay around $50 dollars US for the developer edition. you can google it for a price and availablility, or get it straight from MS.

I have a few full evaluation editions from the Microsoft books that include the 180 day trial and include everything. I know this because I am using one of the disks on my home machine and have already built several cubes with this software.

sorry i was confusing the express versions to evaluation versions; like you said, evaluation versions are timelimit handicapped, but have everything the developer/enterprise versions have.
express version doesn't have all that , of course.

To answer the original question: Yes, you can build in eval and port to full. I believe an in-place upgrade is allowed. If not, you move code/objects from one server to the other in the usual fashion.

Right, but if I develop a cube using the evaluation edition on the server, when the time expires will I not be able to use the cubes that I designed with the full enterprise version of SQL Server 2008? This is simply a 'temporary' thing until we get the fully licensed software. My concern is I build the cubes in the next few weeks and then we get the enterprise edition but the cubes would then be unusable.
