think of the girls......what about the boys ?!
As for you supporting this site, it's common knowledge that you only do so because of the freebies that come your way - still remember the (not one but TWO) free t-shirts!!!
I work for a large company (45K + employees)....my contract comes to an end soon and it is going to be awarded only to small businesses now so my company cannot compete...since I'm a one-person project my boss decides that it's in my best interests if I just switched companies and moved over to the one that gets the contract (my company doesn't believe in retaining good employees..sigh...)
So to "influence" the decision way ahead of time, my boss brings in his "small business owner friend" - introduces him to the client - they discuss contract terms and because this small business guy has an added edge (he's going to hire me - ) over all other competition it's already (kinda) a foregone conclusion that even though the contract will be advertised (because legality demands that everyone gets a chance at it) we all know who's going to get it..wink wink nudge nudge say no more....

Yes, think of the girls, where would they be without all those bills stuffed in their garters? And we could all do with another SQL t-shirt too, come to think about it.
I don't think that marketing and networking events could be misconstrued as unethical, just as long as it's not a Montblanc that comes away with you and the free notepad.

marketing and networking...what about "fair play"...
Rats...does this mean I have to return the montblanc and notepad...
For the last time (what a sexist site this is turning out to be)...why do the boys not need support through college...

The boys dont need it, because a 'friend' who used to do that told me they did it for the chicks.
I could use a new fountain pen set & I'm more of a Wordpad fan.

This is not uncommon. I once worked for a small company where the owner gave me a task (in the relatively early days of client server) to evaluate databases and make a recommendation. After two weeks of research and testing, I came back and told him we should buy sql server. He said "thanks" and the next day went out a purchased ORACLE licenses because of his relationship with a particular vendor.
Not sure if it's related or not, but his company is no more...

Steve, you are absolutely right about this. The lack of personal ethics in business and in life in general is appalling. However, here's a group that is doing something effective about it, The Way to Happiness Foundation International, http://www.twth.org. By getting the booklet, The Way to Happiness, broadly distributed and read we can improve people's ethics level. It is an amazing piece of work. Please help getting it out and around.

(this will come across initially as very obscure)
um ... well... yes.... right... 'scratches head'...battlefield earth didn't seem that 'happy' nor very 'good'
...but maybe I'm willing to believe that life will, likely to contain ups and downs, but at least be somewhat well scripted and plausible... over 'happy'...

Ha, ha!
So you registered to make one post spamming us with scientology? How ironic in a thread about ethics...

In one of my former companies, I was asked to do something unethical, and possibly illegal (relating to a request by a utilities and trades commission...)
I didn't quit - I simply refused the tasks, and told them why - and then told them what I was willing to do instead. What I didn't mention was that if they had someone else do the unethical things, I would have notified the commission of the cover-up. Turns out I didn't need to - the company behaved itself. And oddly enough, the commission was the most impressed by what I DID agree to do - which was simply to organize the documents to be presented in a logical and easily accessible manner (meaning you could find the things you were looking for in mere moments).
My belief is that when people at any level start believing that the only way to get ahead is to cross those legal and ethical boundaries, they blind themselves to the alternatives - which are often simpler and less costly even in the short term. Greed and power-tripping only add to the mayhem, and cement these people in their philosophies. Sometimes you can shake them awake by just saying NO. Sometimes, it takes a higher level of authority (the law).
And by the way, some companies DO have a definition of nominal. At one company I worked at, the rule was basically "If a gift costs more than a coffe cup, don't take it - and report the gift attempt to your supervisor." So there were lots of logo'd coffee cups around - and no ethics problems related to gifts (at least not that I ever heard).

(losely quoting Tom Cruise's appearance on Matt Lauer....)
"GPF, GPF, GPF, GPF, you're glib. You don't even know what ethics is."
My hovercraft is full of eels.

I think the reason the boys don't do it is cause they send their girlfriends out instead.
But really I'm not sexist, it's just fun to get the feminists out in a tiff every now and again.
Yes, being unethical, that's what we were discussing, it's bad, very bad.

Truth be told ...I do not know who Matt Lauer is
April 5, 2006 at 6:50 am
"Matt Lauer has been co-anchor of NBC News’ Today since January 6, 1997. He joined
Today in January 1994 as news anchor. From September 1992 to September ...
In a June 2005 interview with Matt Lauer, Tom Cruise got into an argument with Lauer about psychiatry and called Lauer "glib." "
Max...you shan't have your fun...never get in a tiff...so go find some other "group" to bait...
