I am trying to restore three databases that were backed up on SQL 2005 onto a server running SQL 2008. For each of them when I go through the process of restoring I get the following error:
Object cannot be cast from DBNull to other types. (mscorlib)
What I want to know is what does this error mean and how can I restore these databases with the minimum of fuss?
As a bit of background the SQL2005 server is on my local LAN but the SQL2008 box is at a remote site and because of the size of the backups requires a portable HDD be sent so am reluctant to try another backup in the first instance.
All help gratefully accepted.

Blair

OK, I've just realised that I have done something dumb.. Both servers are running SQL2008, but the source server is running Windows Server 2003 while the destination is running Windows Server 2008.. I knew there was a difference in the config of the two servers but didn't check, just blundered on ahead :doze:
After having a bit more of a look it seems that it is probably a config difference between the two instances, I'll carry on looking and will post if I find anything useful..
So sorry 'bout that, I will punish myself as appropriate later..

I've just tried restoring one of the databases onto the source server as a different database and I get the same error so there must be a problem with the backups.. I'm not sure how as I used the GUI but there you go..
There is a motto here kids.. Always test your backups.
I will close this thread (if I can figure out how) so thank you to those who had a look and sorry for wasting anyone's time..

Was it definitely a problem with the backup? I am having the same issue.

Hi Craig,
Yep, was definitely an issue with the backup. I did another backup, did a test restore back to the same server and then copied and restored on the local server and everything worked fine... I automatically assumed there was something serious as this is the first time I have used SQL2008 rather than something basic like a bad backup..
Good luck with your issue.

Yeah mine was too. The file hadn't copied correctly.
