Error: System cannot find the file specified

  • I'm trying to run a 2K DTS package that is an annual task. It hasn't been accessed/opened since about this time last year.

When I try to open the package I get the error message:

'System cannot find the file specified'

I can right click on the package and see the History...

I don't understand why there's edit history available but MS DTS can't find the package to open it.

How can I recover this package ??

  • It sounds like the DTS package might have been saved as a structured storage file, and not as part of the service itself. If you are trying to open this package from any other box than the server, this might happen.

I know that if you have text file connections in a DTS package, and you open it from your local box, it will search the path to that file on your local box and not the server. This might be the case with your DTS package if it was saved as a structured storage file. I'm not a 100% sure of this, but it might be the cause.

The fact that you can see history for the package is because the history is stored in the sys tables.

    Hope this helps.
