Error opening Visual Studio SQL Server Solution

  • Another user and I have the same exact version of Visual Studio but when they try to open a Solution that I have developed they get the following errors:

They are not able to open any of the projects under the solution. After they close and I open I'm getting similar errors but I'm able to right click on the whole solution and choose Resolve Errors and it reloads each project over. After I save it and the same person tries to open again they get the same errors above. I get the same error as well but I'm able to reload the project.

Why can't they reload the project to success???

  • Did you also install SSDT?

  • Doesn't that come with Visual Studio?

I do not have that installed on my computer and I'm not having troubles after I choose Reload Solution or Resolve Errors.

I am surprised. As far as I know, an SSDT installation is required to be able to edit solutions containing SSIS, SSAS or SSRS projects. You can read that for yourself here on the SSDT download page.

  • It seems the other user didn't have some other products I had installed. They are installing those now. Fingers crossed it works. Because after Friday I won't be at my current job anymore.

  • What version of Visual Studio did you install?  Did you include reporting servers, analysis services, reporting services and integration services during the installation?  I know that Visual Studio 2015 does not install these tools by default and you have to select them during the installation - or you have to install the separate SSDT version to add those tools.

Yeah, if you go to Help/About Microsoft Visual Studio, you can see a list of all the "Installed products" and their versions. If it works for you, I'd compare that list of installed products and their versions with the one that doesn't work. Chances are the other person is missing something or has a different (probably older) version than you do.
