  • Hi Everyone,

Recently I attempted to upgrade from MS SQL Server to MS SQL Server R2.

However I have encountered an error, as shown in the link below:

If anybody can offer any help here it will be greatly appreciated.

  • I'm guessing as you haven't given much info, but presume you're trying to install Enterprise edition on Windows 7 OS...

    and...

Edit: added MS SQL Server link

  • Think you'll find these are the key bits in the error txt file...

    Machine Properties:

    Machine name: HOME-PC

    Machine processor count: 8

    OS version: Windows 7

OS service pack: Service Pack 1

    ...

    Package properties:

Description: SQL Server Database Services 2008 R2

    ProductName: SQL Server 2008 R2

    Type: RTM

    ...

    Installation edition: ENTERPRISE

    ...

I don't believe you can install or upgrade SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Ed. on WIndows 7...unless someone can correct me on this :Whistling:

Edit: Hex colour setting didn't work, so have removed them.

  • Hi Everyone,

  • Hi Everyone,

I managed to install MS SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise into Windows 7 by following the steps below -

1). Added my Windows Account to 'Debug Programs'

    Start | Run | Type: gpedit.msc | OK | Navigate to Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\User Rights Assignment\Debug programs

2). Uninstalled every trace of anything and everything with the program name MS SQL... using CCleaner.

3). Cleaned the registry using CCleaner

4). Installed MS SQL Server R2 2008 using the excellent YouTube video instructions linked below -

Installing SQL Server R2 2008 in windows 7

As a side note I also used a script to enable the MS SQL Ports, it is available here.

I would like to thank everybody again for all of the help that I have received with my post.

    Kind Regards,

    Davo

  • OK, I'm confused here. The yt vid shows the person installing SQL 2008 R2 Developer ed, which is possible as Developer ed can be installed on a wide variety of OS types (Server and Client OSs).

So, david.dartnell, have you managed to install SQL 2008 R2 Enterprise ed on your PC running Windows 7?

I know you mention it, above, but I'm really interested to confirm this is Enterprise ed and not Developer ed.

Edit: changed mention of Hardware to mention of OS types.

  • Hi David,

I was hoping you would come back on this and confirm if you managed to install the SQL2008 R2 Enterprise Database Engine on your Windows 7 OS-based PC.

If this was not the engine, then was it just the SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) tools, etc.?

I would be interested to know if this is the case as Microsoft say that SQL2008 R2 Enterpise Ed should not install on a client-based OS, such as Windows 7.

    Thanks

  • Yes, definitely the Enterprise Edition (x64)! I am a part time student and got my hands on the EE through Microsoft DreamSpark. I wanted to make sure that I was using the most feature rich version of the software, and I didn't want to go to the hassle of installing a Server OS.

Thx for coming back, though not sure your answer has helped as you didn't confirm you installed the SQL Engine, and not just the SQL Server Management Tools. Also, when I look on DreamSpark, I just see SQL2008 R2 Developer ed available...

Just of note, Developer edition is a full feature-rich version, ie, its Enterprise ed but with a different licencing requirement and has been set so that it will load onto Client OS's as well as Server OS's. Apart for the OS thing, Developer ed is to all intents and purposes, Enterprise ed.

    thx

  • Definitely Enterprise Edition - I have a database running with several thousand records, and am using Management Studio to manage, and query the data.

  • Ok, that's proof - tho I rarely come across the ia64 version. Thanks for clarification.

  • Hi,

The 'ia' (which I believe stands for Itanium Architecture) also threw me; so I decided to post a screen capture of the installation folder on my computer -

Hopefully this offers some clarification, just in case I didn't take a screen shot of the correct download in DreamSpark!

    Kind Regards,

    Davo
