Error during upgrade from 6.5 to 2000

  • During an upgrade using the Wizard, I get an error during the 'Export and import via named Pipe' task. The upgrade terminates and creates an error file which says

'CNVPIPE - CApp::CApp - Couldn't connection to the export machine!'

I've searched the Microsoft website but found nothing useful.

    Any help appreciated.

  • You cannot use the Upgrade Wizard to move a 6.5 server to 2000, you have to go to 7 then 2000.

Otherwise you have to use the DTS Import/Export wizard but it may not get all details in the copy.

  • Antares - you are usually the font of all knowledge but not on this occasion. Read BOL 'Upgrading Databases from SQL Server 6.5 (Upgrade Wizard)'

BTW - I've been searching round the web and think this has something to do with domains, account privileges etc

  • Hem, seems I was wrong. Thanks for pointing that out. I will see what I can find out.

  • See if this article applies.

  • Thanks for the reply. There are no spaces in any directory names so I dont think thats the problem.

The upgrade worked fine on 2 test servers. It is now failing in the production environment. The differences are

    1. Prod servers were in different domains

    2. prod. servers are in a DMZ with a firewall

    3. test servers were using SQL 200 SP2. Prod servers are using SQL2000 SP3

    I found this thread

    http://www.sqlmag.com/Forums/messageview.cfm?catid=15&threadid=8205

and am currently working through the suggestions to see if I can get an upgrade to work.

I'll keep you posted. In the meantime, any other help would be appreciated.

  • If nothing found in the KB then I'd go for the working solution. Upgrade to sp2 move the 6.5 dbs and afterwards upgrade to sp3.

  • Success !! The upgrade worked first time with SP2 + security fix applied.
