I've been trying to install Denali on a virtual machine the last few days, but I get a weird error during the set-up.
First some background:
* virtual machine with Windows Server 2008 SP2 as OS
* .NET framework 3.5 SP1 installed
* all the necessary updates are present (such as the no-restart update)
After the set-up rules (which all turn out to be OK) I get the following error:
Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation
That doesn't ring any bells with me (it could have just as easily said "Some flowers are yellow, others not.").
Has anyone else run across this error? Searching Google didn't really bring anything useful. Certainly not in context of Denali.
If more information is needed, just ask...

Obvious.
The setup has invoked something and that has returned an error.
Don't think it needs flowers but you could try yellow ones next to the server :).
I take it nothing useful turns up in the log?
What are you trying to install - could try just the minimum possible.
Cursors never.
DTS - only when needed and never to control.

Thanks for the answer. The problem is that set-up fails directly after the set-up rules, so I haven't seen a UI yet where I can choose settings.
I've searched the logs you mentioned and I found the following errors:
Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation. (the one I get)
--> UI Extension failed to calculate UI data with binding Id 'SuppressPopup'.
--> Recursive calls of PublishingQueue.CallFunctionWhileAutosubscribing<T> are not supported. While autosubscribing for "Microsoft.SqlServer.Deployment.PrioritizedPublishing.SubscriberDelegate", PublishingQueue.CallFunctionWhileAutosubscribing<T> was called again to autosubscribe for "Microsoft.SqlServer.Deployment.PrioritizedPublishing.SubscriberDelegate".
That doesn't add any more value of course, except maybe for people on the development team of Denali 🙂

Allright, I'm installing Denali now.
I created a whole new virtual machine with Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 and there it works perfectly.
Still don't know what the original problem was though.

Hi da-zero,
In the Setup support rules screen, were there any info useful?
Did you send the error report to Microsoft, perhaps using Connect you can give feedback about this error.
I installed Denali on my PC and did not get any exception during the process.
Here is my notes from this experience How to Install SQL Server 2011
Although that was a success, yesterday I get really pain installing SQL2008R2 on my new laptop.

Ironically, it was your article that I was using as a guide when I was trying to install Denali on my virtual machine 😀
No, the set-up support rules were OK, I had everything installed that Denali needed. It was just that between the transition from the setup support rules screen to the next install screen, the setup wizard just crashes. For some reason. But I have Denali now installed on another virtual machine, so I'm ready to go 🙂
I'm not really familiar with error reports or connect, can you point me in the right direction?

You can check the https://connect.microsoft.com/[/url] web site where you can submit your feedback about various Microsoft products
Here is a list where many submitted their comments : https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/SearchResults.aspx?SearchQuery=denali
