error connection failed check SQL server registration properties

  • Hi,

I am pretty new to SQL server 2000 ad would really appreciate it if someone could help me.

    I have 3 machines in a workgroup, say machine 1 , machine 2 and machine 3.

Machine 1 is running win xp home, machine 2 is running win xp pro. my problem is with the second machine. machine 3 is running SQL server under Win NT.

I installed sql server 2000 dev edition on machine 2, I tried registering a remote SQL server ( outside of the workgroup) using Enterprise Manager but get the error

connection failed check SQL server registration properties

I also got the same error when I tried registering the database on SQL serverinstalled on Machine 3.

These machines are connected to DSL via a Netgear router, and all 3  machines are part of the same workgroup. I checked to ensure that windows XP firewall is off. I also have McAfee firewall on machine 2 which i disabled, but i still get the same error when i try to register the remote server.

If someone could please guide me to a solution, that would be great.

    Thanx

  • can the servers ping each other, and can the one outside the workgroup ping them?

  • the issue definitely is more so network related i am sure....machine 1 and machine 3 can ping each other....but gets "Request Timed out" when trying to ping machine 2

similarly machine 2 cannot ping machines 1 or 3

All three are in the same workgroup, XP file sharing is enabled, and teh hared files are visible from all three machines

The server outside the workgroup, i don think can ping machine 2 as these 3 machines are behind DSL modem/router.

    I appreciate your time s m b,

    Thanks

  • could yo define what you mean by workgroup, in terms of the network you are on?

It sounds like the boxes cannot find each other due to some network issue...
