David,
dont' you see some kind of a contradiction when reading the following two statements?
"I will be very much grateful if you can help solve this problem of mine."
vs.
"You are to undertake this assignment individually, ... However, the final submission must be your own work."
If you have some spare time I strongly recommend to look up the words "plagiarism" and "copyright".
What I'd really like to know: What is your intention to ask someone else to do your (home)work even if you're asked to provide your own solution?
How much do you respect a result someone else came up with (not limited to the given situation)? Do you immediately "sell" it as your own work?
Please share your motivation.

Andre,
to your question: you may want to look at Toad Data Modeler.
http://www.toad-data-modeler.com or http://www.quest.com/toad-data-modeler/[/url]
This database design tool costs less than 500 USD.

David,
This is homework assignment, you even copy/pasted your instructor instructions about this being an individual effort.
If you have a specific conceptual question, ask the question but do not expect somebody elso to do your job.
Hope this clarifies a little.

I started out creating ERD's by using pencil and sketch paper.
Then I would use a primitive word processing program.
After several years I was able to use System Architect and ERWin.
At times I was forced to use Visio due to budget constraints
I got the funds to purchse ERWin for two different employers.
I'm impressed how far Visio has progressed. It has come a long way and I can live with that for it is so inexpensive compare to ERWin.
I recognize that ERWin is a far superior product but I can work with the most cost effective tool that provides the best ROI.
