One SQL Server test box in our organization is location over the WAN in another physical location from me workstation. I added information about this box in my Client Network Utility (using TCP/IP). I then registered this server in Enterprise Manager (EM) I have EM open most of the day, but seldonm do iI connect to this particular server. Today Our Network Admin asked me why I am generating so much network traffic to this test Server. I deregistereed it from EM, thinking I could always add it back when I need. The network traffic stopped. My question is why was there Network traffic every 15 seconds when I was not connected to this server? I couldn't find any options in EM to change the frequency of this polling to say every 1 or 2 minutes rather than every 15 seconds. Any one know?

Heck , I've got servers that don't even exist anymore. Hope it not slowing me down trying to get to these guys... I guess EM tries to keep the "green arrow" lit when it does show the servers. What happens if you put that particular server in another EM Server Group (not the "SQL Server Group"), and leave it's tree collapsed?

I hadn't connected to this server since starting EM so I didn't even have a green arrow (just an empty circle) yet EM sees fit to transmit periodic TCP/IP polls.

Well it may not be the solution you want, as it is a global EM setting.
Under Tools, Options you can set EM to Poll the servers to verify the service is running, and the default is .... You guessed it 15 seconds.
Worse comes to worse bump it up to ??, to at least minimize the traffic.
Unfortunately you cannot control this setting by sever. MS here's a suggestion !!!
You might try the collapse group idea, don't know if that will solve it.

Thanks kknudson. I put the offending server in its own group and collapsed the group and no more network traffic. I also upped the time between polling the servers to 60 seconds from 15 seconds

Good so now we know EM only polls the servers on Opened groups !!
ThomasH gets credit for that idea.
Thanks All

Thanks to ThomasH as well. Your suggestion is a simple change that cuts down network chatter.
