Hi All
I have always thought that you can only use Enterprise edition when setting up mirroring but have been looking on the web and it appears im wrong. Was this the case for clustering? Are there any problems when using standard edition for mirroring?
Any help will be gratefully received!
Thanks in advance.

yes you can use standard edition for mirroring i have used it for a couple of years without any issues.
Also when you are using mirroring, you do not need neccesarily need a license for the mirrored server
When doing failover support, a server is designated as the passive server. The purpose of the passive server is to absorb the data and information held in another server that fails. A passive server does not need a license if the number of processors in the passive server is equal to or less than the number of processors in the active server. The passive server can take the duties of the active server for 30 days. Afterwards, it must be licensed accordingly.

I think that you can install Enterprise as another instance, but I am not sure. maybe someone else will know for sure

Yes you can install up to 50 instances of Enterprise edition on a single server.

Thanks for your reply, can this be done even with SQL standard edition already installed on the server?

If standard is already installed, then you would have 49 instances remaining for enterprise edition.

you can install standard and enterprise together under one license, however I would expect that would have to be an enterprise license.
mirroring - with standard edition you can only do synchronous (high safety) mirroring. I've never found that a problem but the network should be fast and the databases not too far apart.
clustering - standard edition only allows two nodes.
