English Query and Visual Studio .NET

  • I'm just getting into Analysis Services and reading about deploying an English Query project to the web. However, the book states that Visual Interdev is required for the web deployment.

In the current Visual Studio .NET 2002 products from Microsoft, Visual Interdev has been eliminated/merged, right ? What version should I purchase to build English Query and other Analysis Services applications ?

    Visual Basic .NET Standard 2002

    Visual Studio .NET Professional 2002

Visual Studio .NET Enterprise Developer 2002

Visual Studio .NET Enterprise Architect 2002

Any opinions for which version is best for department-sized (not whole enterprise) web projects ?

  • In my opinion, it is by far the best value for money to purchase a MSDN Universal License. The pricing for this on MS site currently indicates $2799 / yr, and $2299 / yr. with a $300 rebate for using DVD's. You can qualify for the renewal price, which amounts to $2000 /yr. Even if this price seems steep to IS budgeting reviews, it far exceeds the value of purchasing even a single Visual Studio license. You obtain SQL Server licenses, OS licenses for development boxes, and all development products and updates. Enterprise Edition of VS.NET is $1799 for the upgrade version. Even if it's deemed too expensive ongoing, do it for a year.
