does anybody have any experience, reccomendations etc on sql server data encryption tools. XP_encrypt vs netlib encryptionlizer, are there other tools
Why is encryptionizer so much more expensive?
Of the three types of encryption: password, object and data is there any tool that addresses all 3.
TIA

Another alternative is DbEncrypt.

Encryptionizer and DbEncrypt cost more because they provide significantly more functionality, support, etc... Consider the cost of the development and support effort that will surround building your own solutions or using some of the APIs. When something goes wrong, who are you going to call.

"significantly more functionality" is a generalism - more functionality than what XP_CRYPT? What is the additional functionality?
I have to say I'm not a huge fan of support fees. If it costs me anything the answer to your question would probably be nobody.
My question was not build vs buy but some TANGIBLE discussion of differences and experiences of different products.
I'd be interested in posts from people not vested in marketing a particular solution.

Do I smell a new app in the works sir?
I have looked at a few tools for this and still think they are all too high but if your market is willing to pay for it then why not. Get a good foot hold, a decent backing budget and the firs real competition tht comes along has to fight tooth and nail against you when you undercut their price (think Microsofts 40billion surplus and what that means).
I do have some C source somewhere I started to encrypt data using the Crypto APIs from MS but had too much on my plate (and still do) to do much with it if I could find it.

I appreciate your reply. We have plenty of new apps. in the works and a few "hot out of the oven" so you could be smelling a few different things.
But for now I am interested in how the market is being served in the area of sql server encryption. Password, database and data - but not necessarily in that order.
I'd also be curious to see if encryption improves in Yukon. The market for Oracle encyrption seems a bit "thin" probably because they do it a bit better than MSFT thus limiting the market for 3rd party tools.
Speaking of this - didn't Lumigent have a Log Auditing tool for Oracle? Now I don't see it anymore. I *thought* that unlike SQL Server - Oracle allowed it's transaction logs to be read. I would imagine paying thousands of dollars for a 3rd party tool to duplicate this feature would be a waste of money. But this is another thread....
