My boss wants to encrypt the data sent between a SQL (2005) Server and our LAN clients. (So a network sniffer won't see clear text transmissions). Can this be done by selecting the proper sql protocol for both client and server? Or is a different approach required?
SSL encryption or IPSEC, depending on the environment.
If I can assume you have XP clients and a 2003 server, you can set IPSEC which will also protect against man in the middle, impersonation and brute force attacks on your server.
