I have an active/passive cluster on sql 2008 standard edition. Would like to upgrade to 2008r2 and enterprise edition. So if anyone has done this what path is the best?
A
1. Upgrade to Enterprise 2008 edition
2. Upgrade to 2008 r2
B
1.Upgrade to 2008r2
2.Upgrade to enterprise edition
THis is an older physical cluster so when I jump off the cliff going back not a real option

One thing first, why upgrade to a version that's completely out of support and has barely any changes or improvements over what you're using? If you're upgrading, why not *upgrade*?

Preaching to choir Not my argument, server is DWH server has to last me 6 more months and hit memory limit with 2008 standard.

If that's the only purpose, and it's for 6 months, can you just do the edition upgrade and leave the DB server on 2008?
You won't be gaining much from R2, unless you need the additional BI features that came with it.
