Edit SSIS package in SQLMS

  • I'm actually switching from DTS to SSIS (SQL 2008) and converting some old packages. I didn't find any way to edit and execute step by step a SSIS package in Management Studio??! Does I have to install Visual Studio on the production server in the client's site just to execute step by step (or even edit) a SSIS package??!

thanks for your time and help

  • Right, you can only edit an SSIS package in Business Intelligence Development Studio, commonly known as BIDS. There isn't any facility in SSMS for editing packages.

  • thanks for your reply

So if I understand correctly, I have to install SQL Server, Management Studio AND BDIS to do the same thing I could within Enterprise Manager in SQL 2000 ??

And if I want to edit a SSIS, I have to go in BDIS, modify my package, save it and re-import the package in MS ?? that's not a little bit counter-productive??! It's a lot more time consumming compared to SQL 2000, no?

  • It does take a bit more time and it's because SSIS is a separate service from SQL 2005 on, rather than an integral part of SQL Server. That's why you have to connect to Integration Services in SSMS before you can see packages on the server.

If I recall, BIDS can be installed at the same time you install the other SQL Serve clients e.g. SSMS, SSAS, etc.

  • ok then! thanks a lot for your answer!
