One of the suppliers wants us to use the command DUMP DATABASE instead of the BACKUP database command when backing up their database. However I have no idea of the command or its parameters since it is pretty old stuff. All I want to do is backup the database (its is in simple recovery mode and 80 compatibility).
If I try to find the command, I keep getting redirected towards the BACKUP command!

dump database comes from sybase and was used in earlier versions of MSSQL, it has been deprecated but still works. Just replace word 'backup' with 'dump'
However there is no good reason to do this, results are the same. there are reasons not to do it (deprecated command).
Tell your supplier he is being silly (not quite in those words), use backup and he will never know.

Thanks for that. Actually to please them, I've kept our backups running and set up a dump for them! Its only a minor database and I don't think it will be with us for long, I don't think I can face the argument!

A dump is just a backup. They're EXACTLY the same thing. Dump is just old terminology. I wouldn't do it for them. I get really, really, pissy when people demand silly things from me. Stupid I'll just cope, but silly? No, that must be corrected.
