DTA Stop in between will DTa not release the control

  • Hi,

If the DTA is stopped is between while running on a database (all tables) on Plan Cache, can that create a Deadlock?  Sometime back I found similar situation where I found one connection through that the DTA ran spawned huge threads. Is this because of DTA was stopped in between and it was broken to release connection?

    Thanks.

  • Note: there was no impact on CPU/memory on the server. CPU was tingling below 30%

    Thanks.

  • The DTA is not kindly looked upon in these forums. It tends to produce quirky recommendations.

There are far better ways of tuning indexes, if you are interested in learning.

I've never heard of CPUs 'tingling' before!

  • Microsoft Support Engineer suggested to run DTA to get a feeling about the indexes.

    Thanks.

And just what do you mean "a feeling about the indexes?"

  • Don't ever run DTA against your production DB. If you do want to use it, run it on a test server and evaluate its recommendations carefully before implementing any.
