What is the current recommendation for drive configuration? Raid-1 (for what), raid-1+, raid0+1, raid1+0, raid5? I have a server with 8 drives, plenty of space and am looking for better configuration.
Currently I have 1 raid 1 (c:\Os & d:\Software) and raid 5 for rest of the disks.

With 8 disks I'd usually say RAID5. Maximizes space available and you need the spindles to keep access time down. Usualy want to put the log files on separate RAID1, so you could go 6 on RAID5, 2 on RAID1. I've had decent luck putting log files on same drive set, not in a super intensive write environment. RAID10 always recommended, but expensive.

Tend to agree with Andy, though I might make 2 RAID 1s, one for logs, one for OS, SQL system, backups, tempdb. RAID 4 for the other 4 for data.

How about if there were 8 internal 1TB hard-drives and 4 External 2TB hard-drives, any recommendation for high performance configuration? Thanks.
