Last time I checked, SSC was paying 25$ per article posted for the site... that should convince you ;).

I have heard that Microsoft does not officially support virtualized SQL Server installations. This might be a huge problem if one requires support for an emergency in the production environment.
That would be enough to convince me to stay away or at least not virtualize production SQL instances.

untrue as far as i am concerned. I had a call open recently with MS PSS through our vendor for a problem with a virtual SQL server. They can if they want to get out of support by stating virtual servers are not supported but the longer time goes on the less likelyhood there will be of that in my opinion.
