DR Solution using Volume Shadow Copy Service

    Hi All,

    I have been looking into an environment where they use Netapp SnapMirror to replicate the SAN volumes. They are NOT using the NetAapp SnapManager for SQL server which in turn uses the Volume Shadow Copy Service . The assumemption that the DR solution works although they are just doing a SAN level Volume copy. My gut feeling is that SQL Server will not bring the database up in the DR site. So my question is more clear , is a SAN level snapshot without using the Volume Shadow Copy Service is a proven or Is a proven or effective DR solution ?

    I know volume shadow copy service in Win2003 it is not related to SQL Server because there are only two ways to do DR in SQL Server use the native backup or third party tools like Redgate for more options. Volume shadow copy per Microsoft is for none technical people to recover deleted files nothing more.

    That is not true. Microsoft Provides the Interface for the Hardware vendors to use the VSS Writer to do disk level Snapshot backups. This comes handy for a Hardware DR solution .Both Netapp and EMC has got their products build on top of the VSS Writer Frame work .I ma sure other vendors also has the same suite.

    My Question is that as of a DBA community , do we recommend this ?. I know some environment they may be force to use this as DR Solution , but do you recommend ?

    That is Windows engineers docs in SQL Server all you need to do is create and schedule backups based on the activities of your databases and defined recovery models.

    So you maybe able to use it but you need to run internal tests if you don't find others who have used it.
