Download a SSRS report from web portal

  • I tried to download a report from the new web portal of SSRS 2016, I go to the report, and click manage, and then there is a download, but when I click it, it pop up a save file named $value, what is that?

I suppose it should download the rdl file of the report, but it is not.

I cannot find any documentation online about it.

    Any ideas, thanks

Which browser are you using?  And do you have SP 1 of SQL 2016 installed?

I just tested this from IE (as I have found Chrome/firefox to be problematic with SSRS in the past) on my SSRS 2016 SP1 instance, clicked on manage and then click on Download and I get a pop up with the report name as the file name.  Just with a .rdl on the end.

But, assuming that you are doing all that, when you save it as $value, what happens if you rename that to value.rdl (or whatever you like)?  is it downloading as a valid report definition file just with the wrong filename?

The above is all just my opinion on what you should do.
As with all advice you find on a random internet forum - you shouldn't blindly follow it.  Always test on a test server to see if there is negative side effects before making changes to live!
I recommend you NEVER run "random code" you found online on any system you care about UNLESS you understand and can verify the code OR you don't care if the code trashes your system.

  • Thanks, I am using IE 11.

I tried on Firebox and Google chrome just now, and they work fine, they download the rdl file.

But on IE, I still get the $value file with no extensions.

I tried to rename the file with extension .rdl, and open it in data tools, it is OK to open.
I use the version of the SQL 2016 Microsoft SQL Server 2016 (RTM-CU2) , but it seems not related with the SQL SP1. Since I did not find it mentioned this in release note.
And it works in Firefox and Chrome.

    Thanks

  • Possible restrictions on the server for IE, implemented possibly by Group Policy?

  • Thanks,
server for IE? The IE is installed on  my local computer.
Is there a setting I can check?

    Thanks,

  • I did a reboot of my machine, this time it worked.
I guess something with IE is messed up.

Thank you for reminding me that could be an issue with IE.
