Is there a way to invoke a SQL job from applications other than Sql Enterprise Manager or SS Management Studio.

Yes, there is procedure sp_start_job, you can have a look.

This procedure is located in the msdb database. If your connection is to another database, you would execute like this:
exec msdb.dbo.sp_start_job
For the parameters, look it up in BOL (Books Online).
